Tesco iPhone: Exclusive first picture!

http://crave.cnet.co.uk

It was announced this week that Tesco Mobile is to sell the iPhone. Reactions ranged from amused disdain to utter joy: is this the end of the MessiahPhone's premium cachet, or is it just the start of a price revolution that will put the world's favourite mobile Web-browsing device in the hands of the masses? The iPhone 3G and 3GS could be available from Tesco as soon as Christmas, and we've got an exclusive first picture of the form the phone, er, could take.

Every little helps, right? Fingers crossed that Tesco Mobile will be the company to eviscerate the cosy circle of inflated pricing offered by O2 and Orange. If you've held out this long without succumbing to the JesusPhone, will the Tesco deal encourage you to finally go Apple? And if you've already got an iPhone in your pocket, will you be switching to Tesco's Finest?

One thing's for sure, even after three years, the iPhone remains the hero product of hero products when it comes to creating heated debate, fevered speculation -- and decidedly dodgy Photoshop mock-ups.

Tesco Mobile 'could start iPhone price war'

http://www.velti.com

Apple's mobile internet-based handset, the iPhone, could become the subject of a price war after Tesco Mobile announced it will carry the device.

This is the view of Fraser MacDonald, editor at Stuff Magazine, who noted the virtual network could convince other carriers to look to undercut each other on the cost of the high-end mobile internet device.

However, he also pointed out the effect of Tesco's iPhone release is difficult to judge as it has yet to announce any details of price plans for the smartphone.

Mr MacDonald added any potential battle would depend on whether Tesco sells the handset on behalf of the networks or if it allows a sim-free version to be purchased.

It would open the iPhone up to a wider audience if a price war does commence, he stated, adding: "There are a lot of people out there who can't afford one who would like to get their hands on one."

Tesco revealed on Tuesday (November 24th 2009) it would be releasing the handset in its Phone Shops and via its website.

What effect will Tesco's iPhone launch have on the market?

Google Updates Google Earth App for iPhone

http://www.pcworld.com

Google today announced version 2.0 of Google Earth for the iPhone and iPod touch, just over a year after releasing the first edition of the application, a piece of software which quickly turned into the second most popular download in Apple's App Store. But the past year has also been a stormy one for both Google and Apple, as their respective wireless partners, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, start to duke things out in court.

Google Earth 2.0

First launched in October of last year, the first edition of Google Earth finds out your location either through GPS or by using Google's search function to narrow down your location. You can then use the iPhone's multi-touch gestures for an interactive experience, rotating the phone to switch to a horizon view or making two-fingered circles to spin the landscape around, for instance.

iPhone Worm 'Rickrolls' Jailbroken iPhones

http://www.pcmag.com

F-Secure and many others are reporting on the arrival of the first iPhone worm, spreading in the wild.

The worm, named "ikee" after its author, affects only "jailbroken" iPhines which have been modified to remove restrictions on what software can run on the device. Jailbreaking typically opens up access to certain processes including SSH, with a default root password ('Alpine' on the iPhone).

The worm changes your iPhone's wallpaper to a picture of Rick Astley ("Never Gonna Give You Up") and a message that "ikee is never gonna give you up".

To protect your jailbroken iPhone against infection change the root password. F-Secure has provided instructions here.

ikee appears to be following the lead of the hacker who recently started hacking jailbroken iPhones, locking them up and demanding payment for an unlock code.

World’s Second iPhone Worm Called iPhone/Privacy.A Steals Private Date From Jailbroken Handsets

http://www.softsailor.com

Remember Ikee’s first iPhone worm in the world which targeted jailbroken devices in Australia of users who didn’t change the default root password? Codenamed Ikex, the worm changed your default wallpaper with a Rick Astley picture and got you rickrolled, and besides that it didn’t pose a threat. Well, it was just a matter of time until the worm was handed to another hacker who turned it into “evil malware.” Although Ikee said that the worm was released only to get the attention of users who didn’t change their “alpine” default root password, it seems like another hacker has other plans.

The new worm is dubbed as “iPhone / Privacy.A” and it acts “in secret.” The Privacy.A iPhone worm is capable of retrieving emails, SMS, contacts, multimedia files, calendar appointments, or basically all the date your apps can record, to an untraced source. At the moment security experts do not know everything about the worm, but still they’ve rated the worm as low-risk. I wouldn’t be so sure about that, and I think Apple should make the iPhone more secure because the Cupertino-based company owes that to millions of users around the world.
