New iPhone 4G and Apple Tablet: Will you buy both?

http://www.product-reviews.net

We are only halfway through the first month of 2010 and already the rumors of two new devices from Apple are dominating the news. Apple will hold an event at the end of this month, it is then where recent reports suggest that they will announce their new tablet PC and a new iPhone 4G.

We would assume that the new iPhone for 2010 would be released in June or July, as previous models have in the past, but the onslaught of Google Android handsets has changed all that. Apple knows that the recent launch of the Google Nexus One phone has made them rethink things a little, and feel the need to launch out of cycle.

However, Apple fans now have a huge decision to make, do they spend their hard earned money on the new Tablet device, or would they rather get their handsets on the fourth version of the iPhone?

Looking back at previous news, it looks as though the Apple Tablet PC will be launched in March, and there could be two versions, one with an LCD screen and the other with an OLED screen. According to recent reports, Apple has been buying up all the 10-inch OLED and LCD screens.

Google Nexus One sales 80x lower than iPhone?

http://www.techradar.com

First week apparently very disappointing.Google's first phone, the Nexus One, has apparently sold only 20,000 units in its first week on sale.

The data comes from Flurry, the app analytics firm, which states that this number compares with 250,000 of the Motorola Droid (Milestone over in the UK) and 1.6 million iPhone 3GS in their respective first weeks on sale.

However, it's worth noting that a caveat is added due to Google's new method of distribution, selling direct to the consumer and no in-store contracts being offered by the network providers.

New model

This means there's been a lot less in the way of advertising and hype the way other top level phones are promoted prior to going on sale, as well as less chance of customers becoming aware of the phone as they walk into a shop.

"As a product, the Nexus One boasts the most dvanced Android OS to date as well as unique features, such as Google Voice and Google Maps," said Flurry according to Mobile-Entz.biz.

"However, potentially due to the heightened "promise" created by early buzz, the handset has ultimately fallen short on sales expectations."

The Guardian iPhone app sees 70k downloads but how will it pay its way in the future?

http://eu.techcrunch.com

[UK] We knew it was sitting pretty at the top of the paid news chart in the UK but now The Guardian newspaper has revealed that its iPhone app has seen 70,000 downloads in its first month.

Initially launched on the 14th of December 2009 and available in the UK, Ireland and US, the app has since extended its distribution to also include most European countries, as well as Australia and Canada. With much wider circulation, expect sales (and revenue) to remain strong.

That said, the app represents a one-off payment and it’s not yet known how the newspaper plans to make revenue sustainable.

A quick back of the envelope calculation suggests that revenue generated by The Guardian’s iPhone app could be in the region of £117,110 in month one, based on the app selling for £2.39 – although pricing varies across currencies – and Apple taking its standard 30% cut.

We hear that the going rate for iPhone app development in the UK can be as little as £10,000, which if true would – superficially at least – present a very healthy margin.

iPhone app proves users are willing to pay

http://www.guardian.co.uk

UK's first official paid-for news application has been downloaded almost 70,000 times in its first month. Are people willing to pay for a news app on their iPhone? In the UK, news organisations have been sceptical, and offered their applications for free, among them Sky News, whose app launched in May and has just passed 1m downloads.

iPhone apps from the Financial Times, the Telegraph and the Independent are all free, with the Indy saying its application has been downloaded 59,000 times since its launch last August.

However, figures released today prove that iPhone users are willing to pay for the Guardian app: it has been downloaded almost 70,000 times in its first month, and is currently at number 26 in Apple's UK App Store chart.

Although it costs £2.39, it has been downloaded exactly 68,979 times since its launch on 14 December. It was originally only available in the UK, Ireland and the US, but now launched in most European countries, as well as Australia, Canada and the US.
