Sydney - US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki crashed out in the first round of the Sydney International Monday to China's Li Na while Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm continued her renaissance.

Li upset fourth seed Wozniacki, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Date Krumm battled to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over world number 20 Nadia Petrova of Russia.

Li, who lost to Wozniacki in their only previous meeting, dug deep after dropping the first set to prevail in almost two hours against the tiring Dane.

"I didn't play my best game today," said Wozniacki. "It was tough out there. It was my first real match this season.
"I didn't really feel as comfortable as I thought I would and she played well. Just better than me today for sure."

Maria Sharapova gave her Australian Open hopes a boost with a straight-sets win over world No 4 Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, at the Hong Kong Classic on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Russian fought back from two breaks down in the first set to win 7-5 6-3.

The world No 14 has retained her enthusiasm for the sport, saying: ‘I just love to compete. It makes me keep working to improve my play and to try to become a better performer.’

Sharapova said she was excited that Belgian pair Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters have returned to the game.

“I have had three great matches against three different types of players,” she said. “It was a little up and down today, but overall it is definitely good to have these wins behind me.”

Wozniacki raced into a 5-3 lead after capitalising on a slow start from Sharapova. But she wasn’t unable to serve out the opening set and Sharapova claimed the set in just under an hour with three consecutive breaks.

Wozniacki joins Maria Sharapova and 18-year-old American standout Melanie Oudin in the field of players already committed to play on Daniel Island in what will be the tournament's 38th consecutive year and 10th year in Charleston.
