AT&T Launches iPhone MMS September 25

http://gizmodo.com

Sweet Jesus, AT&T just told us that MMS for iPhone launches September 25. Which is emphatically not summer. It'll be coming via software update for iPhone 3G and 3GS (remember, old iPhones are getting left out).

AT&T admits they're late, saying "it was important to give our customers a positive experience from day one" so they needed the extra to "to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic." Which I think means if MMS doesn't work, everybody can ream the shit out of them for it. At least it's free.

The wait for tethering continues though, with "no set date." They simply "expect to offer it in the future." Again, 'cause the network isn't ready: "This function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect."

Nokia Mural Also Announced for AT&T

http://www.slashgear.com

It looks like Nokia hasn’t forgotten the low-end phones, despite being a little preoccupied. Which is a good thing for all those families looking for a new, simple phone for cheap. While there’s nothing wrong with a simple flip-phone, this thing looks a bit dated, and also resembles a few of the late Motorola W-series models. But, we’re sure that doesn’t matter to the general consensus. After all, it’s a phone, it functions perfectly well enough. Who needs more?

The Mural is a 3G-enabled device, so that’s something. And just like everyone else, Nokia is touting the phone’s social media abilities, including multimedia messages (MMS). There’s a built-in IM client, and the Mural will even provide an email portal. The inside screen is a 2.2-inch QVGA, there’s a 2-megapixel camera on back, and the phone’s memory can be expanded to 16GB. Nokia is boasting four hours of talk time. And, just in case you like listening to music but don’t want to open the device up, there’s some nice music playback keys right on the front.

The FCC, the iPhone, and the Balance of Free and Fair Markets

http://www.deramos.org

Hmm...now the Federal government, in the form of the FCC, is trying to get to the bottom of this soon-to-be (if not already) Apple iPhone App Store/Google Voice/AT&T debacle. As of now, AT&T says that it is not responsible for the operations of Apple's App Store. Things the make you go hmm...

I hope that the end result of this episode involves a balance of freer and fairer markets, at least in the realm of wireless communication (if not everywhere else, too). If the Federal government plays this slightly trivial issue (relatively speaking...) right, then it is well on its way to show how it can affect markets for the better. That's one of the biggest issues in today's world of politics, especially American politics, and especially in relation to economics: How much should the Federal government affect the marketplace? This goes for not only wireless communication but also automobiles and health insurance, and markets beyond and in between, whether interstate or even international (but globalism is another issue for another time).
