Meet Julie Henderson, 4 times a ‘Sports Illustrated’ swimsuit model

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com

Julie travels to photo shoots all over the world. When she comes home to her apartment in New York’s financial district, “I like just keeping house and spending time with my family and friends.” “I’m always open to new adventure,” she said. “I’m starting a skincare line based on the Henderson grapefruit. My grandfather was a grapefruit farmer in South Texas. He discovered a new type of ruby-red grapefruit — it’s now called the Henderson grapefruit. It’s actually more of a pink color that deep red.” Her line doesn’t have a name or launch date yet. But Julie is pretty sure the first product will be an exfoliating cream with the word “renewal” in the title. To stay in shape, she combines yoga with intense Physique 57 workouts — “They really kick your butt!” — and she runs on the bridges of New York. SI models are expected to be in good shape, not emaciated like runway models, she said: “Sports Illustrated embraces our curves.”

COMFORTABLE IN THEIR SKIN: Yoga Goes Au Naturel

http://www.lvrj.com

David Oliphant teaches a naked yoga class for men at The Arts Factory. The nude yoga movement is catching on nationally and Oliphant plans to eventually offer more classes. Over the past couple of years, yoga instructor David Oliphant learned two valuable lessons: 1. Taking his clothes off could provide a sense of empowerment and freedom, in the right situations, of course.2. Innocent activities and facts can be tainted when you add the word "naked" to them, especially in Las Vegas. A yoga teacher for the past five years, Oliphant started offering men's naked yoga classes in a downtown studio in October. He offers classes through his Web site, yogawithdavid.com. Doing the Downward Facing Dog and other hatha poses sans clothing is a relatively new way to practice yoga, but it has a national following. The Web site nakedyoga.net lists several cities where classes can be found, including San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles. It is exactly what it sounds like; a group of men get together, take their clothes off and practice yoga. Men, and women, have shown interest in Oliphant's classes and his rosters have increased from a handful to a couple of dozen students.

Finding a fad that keeps me healthy and boosts my well-being

http://www.thenational.ae

Over the past few years, yoga has become something of a New York phenomenon, simultaneously synonymous with Alphabet City hippies, college students and rich housewives on the Upper East Side. Yoga, a traditional physical and mental meditative discipline that originates in India and has its roots in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, often gets dismissed as a sort of dainty pastime. But it is actually one physical discipline where a skinny girl can do more challenging moves than a big, buff guy. Practising yoga is supposed to lead to a greater union between the mind, body and spirit to attain self-enlightenment, and this is what I find most attractive about it. For me, an essential part of Islam is the way it connects spirituality with everyday actions, so that religion isn’t relegated to the four walls of a masjid during prayer but becomes something that every individual takes with them in their daily lives. My first experience with yoga was two summers ago when my sister’s roommate suggested we try some free yoga classes, of which there are several in the city. “Why not?” I thought. I’m always up for a new adventure.

Slow Breathing May Soothe Pain

http://www.foxnews.com

The simple practice of slow breathing may help people deal with the physical and emotional reactions to moderate pain, a small study suggests. Researchers say the findings, published in the journal Pain, offer support for the idea that yoga-style breathing exercises and meditation can help ease chronic pain. The study gauged pain responses among 27 women with the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia and 25 healthy women the same age. Researchers found that when they had the women perform slow breathing, it dampened their reactions to a moderately painful stimulus — brief pulses of heat from a probe placed on the palm. Overall, the women rated the pain intensity as lower and reported less emotional discomfort when they slowed their normal breathing rate down by half. The benefit was greater and more consistent among the healthy study participants than those with fibromyalgia. However, the findings suggest that breathing techniques could offer an additional way to deal with fibromyalgia or other types of chronic pain, according to lead researcher Dr. Alex J. Zautra, a psychology professor at Arizona State University in Tempe.
