Windows 7 was "inspired by Mac", Microsoft admits

We reckon a lot of Mac users will be dashing across to read PCR’s interview with Microsoft’s partner group manager, Simon Aldous, today, if only to look in black and white at his admission that Windows 7 was “inspired” by Apple’s Mac OS X.

As readers hear the faint strains of ‘Follow the Leader”, here’s a few samples of what he said:

“One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it’s very graphical and easy to use. What we’ve tried to do with Windows 7 – whether it’s traditional format or in a touch format – is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics,” he said.

“We’ve significantly improved the graphical user interface, but it’s built on that very stable core Vista technology, which is far more stable than the current Mac platform, for instance.” (Oh yeah?).

Create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics?

Where did we hear that before?

And isn’t that what everybody knew already?

Perhaps that’s why Windows XP users should consider switching to a Mac.

Microsoft poaching Apple store managers and sales staff

Microsoft is beginning to look to Apple for more than just inspiration for its retail stores, the company is now also starting to hire away its retail employees.
People that have spoken to The Loop on condition of anonymity confirm that Microsoft has contacted a number of Apple’s retail store managers to work in their stores. In addition to “significant raises,” the managers have also been offered moving expenses in some cases.

Once hired, the ex-Apple employees are then contacting some of the top sales people in the Apple retail organization offering them positions at Microsoft retail. They have also been offered more money than what they made at Apple.

It was revealed in July that Microsoft would model its stores after Apple’s. Microsoft will include a Windows 7, PCTV and Smartphone sections along the walls. In the center there will be tables with products on them labeled Learn, Connect and Info.

Of course, Microsoft will also have a “Guru Bar,” modeled after the Apple Genius.

The fact that Microsoft is poaching Apple’s retail employees is a smart move. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen.

Apple: New Macs Coming Soon?

Is Apple (AAPL) about to unveil updated Macs?

Research firm Wedge Partners thinks so. They assert in a note today that the company will release both new iMacs and new MacBooks “in the next several weeks.”

Wedge sees a redesigned iMac witjh a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges. The MacBook redesign “is likely to be limited,” Wedge asserts.

Meanwhile, the firm also expects “new, lower price points to drive demand and create a meaningful competitive threat” to coming PCs based on Windows 7 as well as to the booming netbook segment. “We believe these new designs and price points will help Apple achieve a 3 million unit quarter for Macs in [calendar] Q4.”

Why Is It Called Windows 7?

For those wondering why the new version is Windows 7 instead of some other number, it's based on Microsoft's version numbering scheme. Versions known by other numbers (95, 98) or names (Me, XP, Vista) used internal version numbers. XP was version 5.1, Vista 6.0, and the new one is 7.0.

Windows 1 was released in November 1985, 2.0 in October 1987, and 2.1 (a.k.a. Windows/286 and Windows/386) in May 1988.

Windows 3, which introduced some 32-bit capabilities, came to market in May 1990 and came into its own with version 3.1 in April 1992.

Microsoft split off a "new technology" version of Windows to compete with Unix. It was heavily influenced by Microsoft's partnership with IBM that created OS/2, and development of the new version began as OS/2 version 3. It shipped as Windows NT 3.1 in July 1993 and was fully a 32-bit operating system. It was the first version of Windows that did not run as a shell on top of DOS. Windows NT 3.5 shipped in 1994, and 4.0 in 1996.

Windows 4 came out as Windows 95 in August 1995, the first consumer version with pervasive 32-bit support and pre-emptive multitasking.
