When Google acquired the video site in 2006, they obviously made a great decision as the site now ranks as the most popular provider of online video in the United States. In January alone about 6.4 billion videos were viewed, this is the equivalent of 43 percent of the video market in the United States. The figures released from comScore reveal that web surfers in the United States alone sat down to watch over 15 billion videos each month over many different video sites, however YouTube is the site drawing the most attention and the majority of users. Alexa posts this chart showing YouTube's bandwidth usage, page views and ranking over time. At one point, YouTube accounted for over 20% of all Internet traffic (May/June, 2008).

Ballmer calls Apple a competitor for OS, but not smartphones
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke with analysts in New York yesterday, discussing the company's prospects in the current economic downturn. Though the easily excitable executive acknowledged that Windows faces serious competition from Mac OS X (as well as Linux and Google) in the operating system area, he continued to downplay Apple's iPhone as a serious competitor to Windows Mobile.

Google Gmail outage compensation: $2.05 per user
That's the monetary equivalent of what Google offered to compensate Google Apps Premiere Edition customers after Gmail was unavailable for about two and a half hours on Tuesday. And it was being generous: All it had to offer was the equivalent of 41 cents per user.

Google Talk Users Hit with Phishing Attack After Gmail Outage
Google Talk is Google’s instant messaging system. According to Sophos, users have been getting unsolicited messages urging them to “check out this video” by clicking on a link via the TinyURL service. The link directs users to a Web site called ViddyHo, which asks users to enter their Gmail usernames and passwords to get access.

Windows Mobile 6.5 -- Obsolete Already?
Yesterday, at a "strategic update meeting," Microsoft Chief Steve Ballmer said the company will release Windows Mobile 7 -- Microsoft's OS for smart phones -- in 2010. That statement is a little surprising when you consider Microsoft just last week introduced Windows Mobile 6.5, which isn't slated to ship until later this year.

Hands On with Apple's Safari 4 Beta
Safari's main competitor is Google's Chrome browser, whose ultrafast JavaScript speed is one of its bragging points. A couple of the Safari beta's major interface changes too seem to take a page out of Chrome's playbook. As in Google's browser, tabs have moved to the very top of the window.
