Brad and Angelina Top Vanity Fair's Establishment List

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have managed to top yet another list. This one is the Vanity Fair “New Establishment List,” which highlights some of the most influential people in society and pop culture.

Brangelina didn’t secure the #1 spot, but they’re not too far down the line at #8. They’re the only two actors in the top ten of the 100 named, and are placed alongside such powerhouses as Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch.

Vanity Fair states: “The tabloid-haunted, globe-trotting couple reminded us that they both can really act with Pitt’s Oscar-nominated performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Jolie’s in Clint Eastwood’s Changeling.”

“The couple’s foundation donated $1 million to the United Nations
to help the hundreds of thousands of refugees from violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"It also donated $1 million for a cancer center in Springfield, Missouri, named after Pitt’s mother, Jane. Pitt gave $100,000 to the No on Prop 8 campaign in California and said that he and Jolie won’t get married until gay people can, too.”

Microsoft's fight against Apple ads seen as waste of money

With Apple's Mac home market share tripling in the past five years, Microsoft has fought back with its own advertising campaigns attacking Apple for the first time, a move one analyst sees as a mistake.

In Sunday's New York Times, Devin Leonard took a look at the advertising battle between Apple's "Get a Mac" campaign and Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" and "I'm a PC" TV spots. He said that the ad war between the two companies is "destined to go down in history," with the likes of the Pepsi-Coca Cola rivalry of the '80s and '90s. But in a new note to investors, Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company said the Mac's recent market share gains are a result of much more than advertising. In addition, he said the Windows maker would be better suited using its money to combat overseas piracy in emerging countries.

"One has to admit that Apple’s 'Get a Mac' campaign was humorous if nothing else," Wolf said. "But why Microsoft responded with an ad campaign of its own is a mystery. The company erroneously attributed the Mac’s share gains to the 'Get a Mac' campaign... However, the damage done to Windows' worldwide market share was miniscule.

Signs point to possible Apple TV upgrade at Sept. 9 event

Changing an earlier prediction that surprise announcements would not occur, a Wall Street analyst released a second note Tuesday suggesting an Apple TV upgrade could debut at next week's event.

Though he said in an earlier statement that he believed an appearance by Steve Jobs would be the biggest news out of the iPod-centric event, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has now said he has reason to believe there will be an Apple TV-related announcement next Wednesday. He noted that Apple's online store has a wait time of one to two weeks for the 40GB model at $229. Munster said he has never seen a delay for the Apple TV since it debuted in March of 2007. The analyst suggests that Apple is either phasing out the 40GB model, as the 160GB offering is still available, or is selling its remaining inventory before a new product launches.

"We believe the company is most likely phasing out the 40GB model and possibly reducing the price of the 160GB model," he said, "but a new model is possible given the hardware has been the same for 2+ years."

The War on Buttons

There's a war on buttons. No, not the clothing kind; bulging American waistlines are the biggest threat they face. This war is against buttons of the electronic variety, those tireless servants that dot elevators, cell phones, car dashboards and control panels the world around. They're the perfect antidote to the baffling binary of a switch. One button, one function, press here to power/submit/self-destruct. Simple? Yes. Elegant? Apparently not. Or at least that's the thinking at Apple, who released an update to their iPod Shuffle line on March 11 that's completely devoid of buttons. It shouldn't be surprising — if the offensive against buttons has a four-star general, it's Steve Jobs. He and his Apple army have stripped buttons from iPhones, iPods and MacBooks all in the name of their clean, sleek aesthetic.
