Portland realizes that the university controls the fate of Made in Oregon sign

http://www.djcoregon.com

For Hannah Fisher, the debate over changing the Made in Oregon sign to say “University of Oregon” boils down to one issue: fairness. “We all need to raise visibility, but it should not be done at the cost of overshadowing each other,” she said during testimony before the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission. “Making the sign into a University of Oregon sign will do just that.” As student body president of Portland State University, Fisher said she represented PSU’s 27,000 students and said there should be a “spirit of Oregon universities working together in a time of budget crisis.”

Guerrero did himself no favors

http://www.ringtv.com

Just before the start of the fifth round of James Kirkland’s systematic mugging of Joel Julio on Saturday night, HBO analyst Max Kellerman posed a rhetorical question to blow-by-blow man Bob Papa: If Kirkland had been cut early in the fight by a headbutt, in front of his hometown fans, would he have chosen to stop fighting? It was an obvious reference to Robert Guerrero’s no-decision against Indonesia’s Daud Yordan in the opening bout of the telecast, which ended in the second round when Guerrero told the ringside physician he couldn’t see out of his right eye.
“No,” Papa replied.
He was right. You get the sense a hammer to the thorax wouldn’t convince Kirkland to surrender, which is one reason he will get lots of exposure and good buzz and ever-bigger paychecks, at least until he runs into someone who can push him backward a bit.

Max Kellerman leaving ESPN-1050; is pairing with Francesa in the works?

http://www.nydailynews.com

Max Kellerman, the self-anointed sports brainiac, is out at ESPN-1050. Station suits said the decision to end their relationship with Kellerman, who worked the 10 a.m.-1 p.m. slot, was "mutual." What this means is Kellerman, who is also a boxing analyst at HBO Sports, likely has another gig already lined up. Could it be Kellerman is headed to WFAN to work along side Mike (The Sports Pope) Francesa? The FANdroids have been looking for a sidekick for Francesa since his long-time partner Chris (Mad Dog) Russo split the FAN Cave for a solo gig on Sirius/XM satellite radio. A Francesa-Kellerman pairing, a marriage of huge egos, would make for interesting radio and fireworks. In showing Kellerman the door ESPN-1050 boss Tim McCarthy said: "Max is a highly articulate and passionate sports talk host and he brought a unique voice to our talent lineup. "Brandon Tierney, the station's evening talkie, will work in Kellerman's spot until a permanent replacement is found.

Jazz at 35 » Kirilenko, Harpring, free agents help Jazz rebuild without Stockton and Malone

http://www.sltrib.com

All the naysayers and prognosticators who picked the Jazz to struggle or finish last in the league in the 2003-04 season thought of the players who left when they made their predictions. Instead, they should have thought of those who remained in the organization. The Utah Jazz rebuilt themselves from 2003 to 2006 following John Stockton's retirement and Karl Malone's move to the Los Angeles Lakers. Without the two players who had defined the Jazz for many years, Utah was supposed to be lucky to win 15 games as the Jazz learned to survive in the NBA without a Stockton-to-Malone play.
