Redirecting Your Site Without Hurting Your SEO Ranking

http://www.devwebpro.com

There is two redirect codes you may use, the most commonly used and effective one is called a “301 Permanent Redirect”, this will tell search engine robots and browsers to permanently remember that the page requested has been permanently moved and is not coming back. You may also use the “302 Temporarily Moved” redirect, which tells robots and browsers, to forward you to the new temporary page, and do not remember this redirect, instead they will keep trying the page and be redirected until the temporary redirect is removed or is changed to a 301 permanent redirect. Typically when using a 301 permanent redirect, you will even notice your indexed pages in search engines will update the URL to the new one pretty quickly, usually within a few hours, although sometimes it will be a few days. Also, if you are redirecting a specific page on your website to a new one, most search engines should preserve your rankings and indexing positions for the page, since you are directly telling it via the redirect that it has been permanently moved, and thus is not duplicate content.

Make Sense of Huge Keyword Lists with Keyword Niche Tools

http://www.searchenginejournal.com

A few weeks ago I discovered a very cool tool that helped a lot with my keyword research (especially for finding really easy and cool long-tail keywords). So I decided to go ahead and share it with SEJ readers. The tool is called Keyword Niche Tools and it essentially helps you figure your keyword list out by streamlining the process of retrieving important data for each of your key terms. The huge value of the tool lies in:1. Running a large list quickly (giving me more time to dig deeper into keyword segments if needed), 2. Quickly spotting open gaps or niches. This information that the tool helps to generate includes:Overall number of search results; InUrl: search results for each term;

http://www.emarketer.com

Search proved a relatively recession-resistant marketing channel in 2008 and 2009, but growth slowed compared with prior years. The “State of Search Engine Marketing 2010” report, from Econsultancy and the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), indicates growth is set to return in 2010. Search engine marketing spending in North America will be up nearly 14% to $16.6 billion this year. That figure includes spending on paid search advertising, search engine optimization and other search engine marketing technology. Most marketers indicated they would be spending more on paid search and search optimization efforts. Almost one-half of respondents planned to shift print budgets to the area, and more than one-third would spend less on direct mail and more on search. Most marketers saw search optimization as a tool for lead generation and driving traffic to their Website and used site traffic metrics, conversion rate and number or sales or leads as the top three ways to measure its success. Paid search was more likely to be expected to sell products directly.

Google Universal Search: A Mystery and Some History

http://www.huomah.com

Managing Digital Assets To Manipulate Universal Search SERPs. The Google Universal SERP mystery begins with what triggers a Universal SERP and ends with the media/content displayed, information types and vertical searches that make up the SERP. To some extent the mystery can be solved by Digital Asset Managers looking at the evolution of the Google Universal Search SERPs. Universal Search: The Mystery in Google SERPs. The evolution started November 2003 with the infamous Florida index refresh which began a transformation to a more behavioral centric user intent aware SERP from a textual relevance centric algorithm. This likely included "labeling" query spaces, IMO, this might have also included a label/algo addition for transactional/informational searches ie: behavioral in basis. Context Aware Query Classification is a post I did on research that Microsoft did and I felt was close to a reverse engineering of what Google did with Florida update. Webmasterworld thread indicates GBase was at the top of the SERPs in April 2006, however I recall that in or about the fall of 2005 Froogle results were in the SERPs.
