MOVIES, TELEVISION & COMIC BOOKS: Disney Buys Marvel!

http://eclipsemagazine.com

Walt Disney Co. is about to lay out $4 billion to add Marvel Comics to its family – uniting Spider-Man and Mickey Mouse under the same banner. The purpose of the acquisition is to enable Disney to reconnect with the young, male audience it has been losing over the last several years.
While the timing of the deal may seem odd, taking place as it does in a time when the media business is coping with shrinking audiences and declining advertisers, Disney will be acquiring a stable of very popular characters to use in virtually arm of its business interests. Movies, television, comic books, theme parks; live action, animation – for Disney – and Marvel, too – this could be a match made in financial heaven.

As Disney Chief Financial Officer Tom Staggs told Reuters on Monday, “(Marvel’s) audience is surprisingly broad. It transcends gender and age and has real potential worldwide. They skew a little more toward boys than many of our properties.”

Disney/Marvel Mash-Ups

http://punchdrunkcritics.blogspot.com

By now everybody knows that Disney bought Marvel Comics for $4B yesterday. I'm not going to get into why I think this was a good/bad idea, because my concerns are pretty simple: I don't want to see Wolverine and Mickey Mouse anywhere near eachother in any medium I hold dear. Nor do I want to see any Disney influence over the comics I read every week. That's it. The financial side of it I'm far less interested in.

Anyway, the news has brought out everybody with a shred of artistic ability to come up with some of the funniest mash-ups of Marvel/Disney properties I've ever seen.

Major Plot Change at Marvel Comics – Will Spider-Man Look the Same?

http://www.gizmotastic.com

Fan’s over Marvel Comics have seen many plot changes over the years. True Believers have witnessed Captain American gunned down on the courthouse steps and comic publisher climbing the steps to the bankruptcy court. Today a broad shadow of uncertainty has enveloped the entire Marvel Universe when it was made public that Disney will acquire the hero factory that has produced Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Hulk, Captain America and even Howard the Duck.

Stockholders (the real True Believers of record on August 28, 2009 will receive $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. Just as matter of background, I am a stockholder of Marvel.

For Disney it was a fantastic deal, they were able to purchase a stable of over 5,000 developed characters, both hero and villian, that have a proven track record at the box office. Over the last ten years movies based on Marvel Comic’s hero have grossed over a reported $15 billion worldwide. They will spend $4 billion to capture the universe.

All things considered the deal is great considering the risk investors had taken over the years.

Disney Acquires Marvel; Hulk Smash.

http://www.manolith.com

Great. Mickey Mouse and the Disney corporation continue to bend us over the hood of their metaphorical Camero, this time by buying out comics giant Marvel for the staggering sum of four billion dollars. Meanwhile, my offer of ten dollars for my (mysteriously stained) 1983 copy of Heavy Metal. Now, Disney is known for acquiring things. They already own ESPN, The Muppets, and the entire ABC television station (fact!). So why does this hurt even more? Because Disney doesn’t so much leave things alone as it does corner them and cause them to shit out all of what makes them themselves.

Fox Reaches for Fantastic Four Reboot

http://punchdrunkcritics.blogspot.com

Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox has signed on Akiva Goldsman to produce a reboot of the Marvel superhero franchise, the Fantastic Four. This comes on the heels of Marvel being bought by the Walt Disney Co., but Fox still holds the film rights to not only Marvel's 1st Family but also Daredevil, the X-men, and the Silver Surfer. Michael Green, who writes for the TV show Heroes and co-wrote the upcoming Green Lantern film has been brought aboard to pen the script.

Right now there's still no word on who if any of the previous films' stars will be returning, but it's clear that Fox has not been happy so far. Both movies took in nearly $300M combined in the U.S. but failed to latch on with audiences.

You wanna know why they didn't latch on? They weren't very good. I'll be the first to admit that the Fantastic Four is probably the toughest sell of all of Marvel's stable of characters. They have a Golden Age hokeyness to them, much like Superman, that makes it tough to bring them into a more modern age without compromising what makes them unique.

First The Muppets, Now Disney To Buy Marvel Comics

http://theculturepin.com

I grew up on the Muppet Show – a racy, double entendre fest rife with creativity, edge and cunning that strongly informed and influenced my formative mind. Then Disney bought it and when I went to the Muppets show at EPCOT center in Florida I saw a cleaned up, white-washed version that had none of the snags or trickery that had provided me with skepticism, cultural awareness or linguistic sleight of hand with which I had grown up.

Now the monster Mouse Corp is set to take over Marvel Comics – and seeing as I worked as an actor in the very edgy and first Marvel Knights title Punisher: War Zone, I can only wonder what the PTA mop that is Disney will do to the comics company.
