Fan’s over Marvel Comics have seen many plot changes over the years. True Believers have witnessed Captain American gunned down on the courthouse steps and comic publisher climbing the steps to the bankruptcy court. Today a broad shadow of uncertainty has enveloped the entire Marvel Universe when it was made public that Disney will acquire the hero factory that has produced Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Hulk, Captain America and even Howard the Duck.
Stockholders (the real True Believers of record on August 28, 2009 will receive $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. Just as matter of background, I am a stockholder of Marvel.
For Disney it was a fantastic deal, they were able to purchase a stable of over 5,000 developed characters, both hero and villian, that have a proven track record at the box office. Over the last ten years movies based on Marvel Comic’s hero have grossed over a reported $15 billion worldwide. They will spend $4 billion to capture the universe.
All things considered the deal is great considering the risk investors had taken over the years.Read more »
