Hundreds Of Walkers Step Up To Battle Diabetes

Hundreds of people turned out on the first day of spring with a little spring in their step to help fight diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk marked its second year in Volusia County Saturday, and it has grown both in participants and the amount of money raised. Renee Bergin, who began the Daytona Beach walk, said she saw a need for it locally after her own daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “All for those kids, we have to do it for them, because they can’t do it, themselves,” Bergin said. “Everybody wants to help. They can help not only by donating, but by volunteering as well.” Bright House Networks, the parent company of News 13, was a proud sponsor of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk. The goal for this year’s walk is $60,000, all of which will go toward research and education surrounding Type 1 diabetes.

New Pilates program for moms

New mothers want to get in shape quickly and safely, leaving their "baby weight" behind without leaving their baby behind. That's the idea behind a new exercise program created by a mom for a mom. It's called "mamalates." It's a Pilates-based class for mothers, designed to restore core strength. Wendy Foster created it. She's an internationally certified Pilates instructor and a mom. She couldn't find a safe postpartum exercise class after the birth of her first child. So, with the help of a doctor, she created the program and a DVD version for moms to work out at home. "If they had a cesarean, a vaginal birth, if they had abdominal separation or pelvic floor issues -- it all has to be addressed with whatever fitness you're doing postpartum, but the first piece is to learn what's going on with your body before you can rebuild it," Foster said. She helps moms rebuild with a low impact workout. Fitness experts say you must start any exercise program slowly after having a baby. "Everything is kind of relaxed and stretched," said Dr. Tammy Lundervold. "Your joints are not back to where they should be -- tendons, ligaments, nothing has contracted and come back yet.
