Google Updates Google Earth App for iPhone

http://www.pcworld.com

Google today announced version 2.0 of Google Earth for the iPhone and iPod touch, just over a year after releasing the first edition of the application, a piece of software which quickly turned into the second most popular download in Apple's App Store. But the past year has also been a stormy one for both Google and Apple, as their respective wireless partners, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, start to duke things out in court.

Google Earth 2.0

First launched in October of last year, the first edition of Google Earth finds out your location either through GPS or by using Google's search function to narrow down your location. You can then use the iPhone's multi-touch gestures for an interactive experience, rotating the phone to switch to a horizon view or making two-fingered circles to spin the landscape around, for instance.

Apple purchased Placebase in July to replace Google Maps?

http://blogs.computerworld.com

the founder of openplaces.org announced in a tweet that Apple had bought the company that produced the Maps API that his company used in their software.

Pushpin is the name of the software API that Openplaces uses and it is made by a company called Placebase.

"Apple bought PlaceBase - all hush hush. Pushpin site taken offline. Hyperlocal iPhone?"
Then, nothing for a few months. I had seen the post awhile back but couldn't find anything to back it up - the Internet drew a blank. This week, however, I revisited the information. I decided to do a background check on PlaceBase's founder and CEO, Jaron Waldman.

Turns out, he's no longer founder and CEO of PlaceBase in Los Angeles. He's now part of the "Geo Team" at Apple. -whatever that is.
The former CTO of Placebase is now an engineer at Apple as well.

Placebase.com has been pulled offline and Pushpin.com forwards to the API help pages.

Yep, Apple bought Placebase. But what are they going to do with this software?

Why You Haven’t Got You Google Wave Invite Yet

http://jessenewhart.com

The obvious reason you haven’t received your Gwave invite yet, is the fact that nobody has invited you :)

But if you’ve managed to wrangle yourself an invitation from one of the 100,000 preview invitees or the original dev sandbox invitees, originally handed out by Google, here are a few thoughts on why you haven’t got in yet.

All that I’ve talked to on Google Wave were awarded 8 invitations to give out. Some have claimed that certain big wigs got more, but I haven’t personally talked to anybody who has.

Once you invite somebody into Gwave, it says that they have been ‘nominated’ which to me means that the invites are placed into a queue somewhere. Some said that a few of their ‘nominations’ have got in but I’m not sure that these people weren’t already among the original Google invitees and it just took them longer to accept their invitations.

If you read the image above it says “Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick.” What I think Google is doing is using new Google Wave users gradually in order to test how robust the system is and to fix errors along the way.

Free Google Wave Invites

http://www.garryconn.com

Are you looking for a Google Wave invite? No problem. As soon as I get a Google Wave account and some invites in my account, I’ll be sure to invite you. Drop a comment letting me know you want in, and I’ll send you the invite. If you don’t know what Google Wave is, you need to read this post and this post and also watch the video included above.

In short, Google Wave is an online communication and collaboration tool that will soon totally change how you blog, email, chat, and instant message with people online. It will change how you work online by yourself, with others, and in very large groups.

In summary, Google Wave is what email would be like if it were invited today, rather than 20 years ago. It’s pretty powerful stuff, and something that you will not want to be left in the dark about. If you don’t have an account, I totally recommend requesting one. If you need an invite, hopefully I have an account soon and I’ll send you one.

Google Launches the Wave Communication Tool

http://www.slipperybrick.com

Google has now started public testing by invitation only of Wave, a new online tool for communication and collaboration between people online. Wave has been described by its designer as what email would look like if it was invented today, and contains real-time communication through text, photos, video, maps and more according to Google.

The communication using the Wave tool is live somewhat like an instant messenger allowing users to see others edits as they make them, character by character. Should a users not be online at the same time, the communications will still be available to view at a later date, much like emails waiting in your inbox.

Wave is by invitation only, meaning Google is making it available to particular Google users and developers since the tool has an API that lets developers create custom applications against it. Invitees area also able to invite friends since communication and collaboration is difficult to do by yourself. Wave runs native in most browser but interestingly enough, not Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. For IE users will need a special Chrome plugin to make it work, however Google insists this is not deliberate.
