Google Voice: The Throwdown

http://modmyi.com

Friday saw a war of press releases between Apple and Google over the apparent rejection of the Google Voice app on the App Store. The Googleplex and One Infinite Loop made public more details on their dispute, which cuts right to the heart of public perceptions of both companies, Apple's willingness to allow competition in key areas of iPhone functionality, and the coming battle for dominance in the mobile device marketplace.

Last month, the FCC began an investigation into reports that Apple had blocked Google Voice from the App Store. It sent letters to Google, Apple and AT&T, requesting details on communications between the companies, whether the app had in fact been blocked, and whether AT&T had played any role in the decision. In response, Apple sent a letter to the FCC, saying in part "Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application
, and continues to study it."

Our complete letter to the FCC regarding Google Voice for iPhone

http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com

Back in July, the FCC sent letters to Apple, AT&T, and Google asking about the rejection of the Google Voice for iPhone app.

When we submitted our letter on August 21, we asked the FCC to redact certain portions that involved sensitive commercial conversations between two companies -- namely, a description of e-mails, telephone conversations, and in-person meetings between executives at Google and Apple.

Shortly afterward, several individuals and organizations submitted Freedom of Information Act requests with the FCC seeking access to this information. While we could have asked the FCC to oppose those requests, in light of Apple's decision to make its own letter fully public and in the interest of transparency, we decided to drop our request for confidentiality. Today the FCC posted the full content of our letter to their website (PDF).

We continue to work with Apple and others to bring users the best mobile Google experience possible.

Poll: Should the FCC be Investigating Apple and AT&T over Google Voice?

http://www.theiphoneblog.com

Apple rejects the official Google Voice app from the App Store and removed previously approved Google Voice apps from 3rd parties. Sources tell Daring Fireball and Techcrunch it was at AT&T’s request. AT&T tells people Apple controls the App Store. Apple, when they first introduced the App Store, said that prohibited apps included anything that adversely affected the cell network, VoIP (except over Wi-Fi), and the nebulous “unforeseen”, a catch and cover all. Now the FCC has sent letters to Apple, AT&T, and Google in an attempt to get answers as to who knew what and when — to get a look inside the black box of the App Store approval (and rejection) process.

The FCC, the iPhone, and the Balance of Free and Fair Markets

http://www.deramos.org

Hmm...now the Federal government, in the form of the FCC, is trying to get to the bottom of this soon-to-be (if not already) Apple iPhone App Store/Google Voice/AT&T debacle. As of now, AT&T says that it is not responsible for the operations of Apple's App Store. Things the make you go hmm...

I hope that the end result of this episode involves a balance of freer and fairer markets, at least in the realm of wireless communication (if not everywhere else, too). If the Federal government plays this slightly trivial issue (relatively speaking...) right, then it is well on its way to show how it can affect markets for the better. That's one of the biggest issues in today's world of politics, especially American politics, and especially in relation to economics: How much should the Federal government affect the marketplace? This goes for not only wireless communication but also automobiles and health insurance, and markets beyond and in between, whether interstate or even international (but globalism is another issue for another time).

FCC Investigating Apple's Rejection of Google Voice related iPhone Apps

http://www.iphonehacks.com

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is investigating Apple's rejection of Google's official Google Voice application and other third-party iPhone apps from the App Store. Apple had rejected the iPhone Apps earlier in the week. They had stated that the iPhone apps were duplicating features that are already available on the iPhone such as Dialer, SMS etc. Google Voice (formerly GrandCentral) is a free and innovative service that uses voice over internet protocol to link customers' phone numbers together. Users of Google Voice are able to select a single U.S. phone number, from various area codes. When a Google Number is called, any or all of the user's phones may be set to ring based on the calling number or on the contact group (e.g. Family, Friends, Work, etc), and/or based on time of day (e.g. disabling a home phone during business hours and routing calls to mobile or business number).
