New weight loss drug aims at fat loss - not muscle loss
One of the primary problems of losing weight is the fact that all weight is not created equal. When you lose weight you will inevitably lose muscle mass as well. What if there was a way to tell you body to burn only fat?
Researchers at the Garvin Institute in Sydney, Australia, say they've created a new weight loss drug to do just that.
In mice, the drug has shown to be an effective tool in changing the signals to the brain that determine what fuel the body is to use for energy. By stopping certain signals, the body turns to fatty acids rather than protein. The result? The mice lost body weight while maintaining muscle mass.
This is the opposite of the way traditional weight loss drugs work. They work to alter the way the brain sends signals to the body in an effort to suppress appetite.
From ABC News, the head of the neuroscience program at the Garvan Institute, Professor Herbert Herzog, says these therapies tend to be ineffective.
"What we've found is that blocking one system that influences appetite and body weight regulation might not be enough to cause a significant change in reducing body weight," he said.

The Mediterranean’s Secret Ingredient: Walnuts
If you associate walnuts with cinnamon buns and other rich pastries, you might not realize what a healthy food they really are. These delicious little packages are dense with nutrients, an excellent source of manganese, copper and tryptophan. Particularly noteworthy for their omega-3 fats, walnuts are also high in antioxidants. In a recent Spanish study, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with walnuts was shown to significantly lower risk factors for heart disease.
Walnuts are used in sweet and savory dishes throughout the Mediterranean. Along the Italian Riviera, a rich ricotta and walnut sauce traditionally is served with ravioli filled with greens. In Turkey, a thick, garlicky walnut sauce called tarator is served with cooked vegetables, much as aïoli is in the South of France.
In France, walnuts are added to salads, breads and many desserts, and they are eaten fresh as well as dried — a great delicacy in the fall, just after the harvest. I’ve never encountered creamy, fresh walnuts in American farmers’ markets, but if you know a walnut farmer, perhaps you could request some the next time they’re harvested.

Tweet What You Eat diet shames people into calorie counting
A new diet on Twitter dubbed Tweet What You Eat has been hailed for its effectiveness as it shames people into listing the amount of calories they have consumed each day.
The diet on Twitter is being used by celebrities including Stephen Fry, who has reportedly lost six stone in six months, and Little Britain star Matt Lucas, who says he has lost half a stone in a fortnight.
Tweet What You Eat is an online food diary that allows you to instantly enter everything you eat. The application, which already has more than 8,000 followers, has a 'CrowdCal system', a completely crowd-sourced calorie database, which fills in food entries' calorie count based on what other members have entered. It allows you to keep track of your weight to see if the diet is working while there is also a forum for dieters to discuss food.
Alex Ressi, creator of Tweet What You Eat, said: "People need to be able to share in the success and lean on others.
"I've had people write in and share stories about 20 pound, 40 pound and the most dramatic – a 70 pound weight loss using the Tweet What You Eat tool and working in conjunction with a nutritionist."

Tweet yourself thin with a Twitter diet
One of the latest trends on Twitter is a diet application which lets the user list the food he or she has eaten.
Tweet What You Eat is essentially a food diary that you can keep up to date with everything you consume, with calorie values provided for the foods.
The idea is that everyone can see what you’re munching, and the potential calorific damage you’re doing to your body, hence you’ll be shamed into a healthier diet.
In theory anyway, although we imagine some people will use it as a boast sheet of how many kebabs they’ve had this week.
You could also argue that the calorie values may be suspect in some cases, as they’re compiled using CrowdCal, a user-driven calorie database which isn’t guaranteed to be accurate.
However, the proof is in the pudding (or indeed not eating the pudding), and Tweet What You Eat has been used successfully by several celebrities.
Stephen Fry reportedly lost an impressive six stone in six months, and Matt Lucas dropped half a stone in two weeks. Presumably it was more effective than “Fat Fighters” anyway.

The Ultimate Fat Burning Diet Plan
Often the biggest problem with people wishing to lose weight is their inability to find a suitable diet plan that would help burn their existing fat, trim their unnecessary cravings for empty high-calorie foods and help them burn more for the ideal figure they have in mind. All the existing diet plans today are mostly effective in reducing cravings and trimming the fat.

Sacred Heart Diet
The Sacred Heart Diet is a fad diet that has been circulating for many years. The diet was supposedly thought to come from the cardiology department at Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital where it was used for overweight heart patients. However, like most of these diets – this is an urban myth.
The Sacred Heart Diet has been called a number of different names (such as the Spokane Heart Diet, the Cleveland Clinic Diet, Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet and the Miami Heart Institute Diet). The diet also bears a striking resemblance to the cabbage soup diet.
The Sacred Heart diet is a soup-based diet, and claims that you will lose 10-17 pounds in the first week. This may be true, but most of the weight will tend to be water – and will be gained right back very soon after the diet.
This diet is very clearly an unsustainable fad diet, but is not as nutritionally unsound as similar diets. Most of these diets claim some magical fat-burning science is involved, or that there is something special about the combination of foods. This is simply untrue – it is nothing more complex than a reduction in calories!
