iPhone MMS update makes AT&T happy. The users? Not so much.

http://features.csmonitor.com

Despite a deluge of complaints – some of them posted right here on this blog – AT&T says it is happy with the roll-out of the long-awaited MMS update for the Apple iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S. On Friday, the update was released to iPhone owners across the country, temporarily putting serious strain on the network.

Throughout the day, users experienced various problems with the picture-messaging service: Many couldn’t send or receive MMS text messages at all. Some reported that it was taking up to 20 minutes to send each message. Other frustrated users got halfway through dispatching a text, only to be greeted with an error message.

“Up and running in Atlanta,” one of our readers wrote early on Friday afternoon. “But when [the MMS service] updated it bricked my phone for a bit. Had to do a hard reset just to start it back running. VERY slow. Sometimes fails to send but guess it is from all the traffic.” Others were more succinct: “Updates phone. Tried to send a message. Failed,” reported a reader in Las Vegas.

Microsoft poaching Apple store managers and sales staff

http://www.loopinsight.com

Microsoft is beginning to look to Apple for more than just inspiration for its retail stores, the company is now also starting to hire away its retail employees.
People that have spoken to The Loop on condition of anonymity confirm that Microsoft has contacted a number of Apple’s retail store managers to work in their stores. In addition to “significant raises,” the managers have also been offered moving expenses in some cases.

Once hired, the ex-Apple employees are then contacting some of the top sales people in the Apple retail organization offering them positions at Microsoft retail. They have also been offered more money than what they made at Apple.

It was revealed in July that Microsoft would model its stores after Apple’s. Microsoft will include a Windows 7, PCTV and Smartphone sections along the walls. In the center there will be tables with products on them labeled Learn, Connect and Info.

Of course, Microsoft will also have a “Guru Bar,” modeled after the Apple Genius.

The fact that Microsoft is poaching Apple’s retail employees is a smart move. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen.

Google Voice: The Throwdown

http://modmyi.com

Friday saw a war of press releases between Apple and Google over the apparent rejection of the Google Voice app on the App Store. The Googleplex and One Infinite Loop made public more details on their dispute, which cuts right to the heart of public perceptions of both companies, Apple's willingness to allow competition in key areas of iPhone functionality, and the coming battle for dominance in the mobile device marketplace.

Last month, the FCC began an investigation into reports that Apple had blocked Google Voice from the App Store. It sent letters to Google, Apple and AT&T, requesting details on communications between the companies, whether the app had in fact been blocked, and whether AT&T had played any role in the decision. In response, Apple sent a letter to the FCC, saying in part "Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application
, and continues to study it."

Our complete letter to the FCC regarding Google Voice for iPhone

http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com

Back in July, the FCC sent letters to Apple, AT&T, and Google asking about the rejection of the Google Voice for iPhone app.

When we submitted our letter on August 21, we asked the FCC to redact certain portions that involved sensitive commercial conversations between two companies -- namely, a description of e-mails, telephone conversations, and in-person meetings between executives at Google and Apple.

Shortly afterward, several individuals and organizations submitted Freedom of Information Act requests with the FCC seeking access to this information. While we could have asked the FCC to oppose those requests, in light of Apple's decision to make its own letter fully public and in the interest of transparency, we decided to drop our request for confidentiality. Today the FCC posted the full content of our letter to their website (PDF).

We continue to work with Apple and others to bring users the best mobile Google experience possible.

Apple: New Macs Coming Soon?

http://blogs.barrons.com

Is Apple (AAPL) about to unveil updated Macs?

Research firm Wedge Partners thinks so. They assert in a note today that the company will release both new iMacs and new MacBooks “in the next several weeks.”

Wedge sees a redesigned iMac witjh a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges. The MacBook redesign “is likely to be limited,” Wedge asserts.

Meanwhile, the firm also expects “new, lower price points to drive demand and create a meaningful competitive threat” to coming PCs based on Windows 7 as well as to the booming netbook segment. “We believe these new designs and price points will help Apple achieve a 3 million unit quarter for Macs in [calendar] Q4.”

iPhone MMS working for many; two weeks early

http://blogs.zdnet.com

Despite its statement that MMS would be available to iPhone customers beginning on September 25, AT&T began a gradual rollout of the coveted feature in select markets starting on Friday.

According to a report on The Consumerist “seemingly random iPhone users, from Manhattan to Idaho” have reported that MMS suddenly began working on their iPhones beginning on September 11. There’s a nine-page (and growing) thread at Howard Forums starting by iPhone users whose MMS is now working.

Reports vary, but the common thread is iPhone OS 3.1 and AT&T carrier bundle v5.0 or 5.1 for MMS to work. You can check your carrier bundle version by tapping Settings > General > About > Carrier.

Mediaite surmises that the surge of MMS activations is due to “AT&T working through the process of removing the opt-out codes that have blocked MMS from working on iPhone accounts since the 3.0 release.”

I reported here that AT&T began testing MMS in Washington around August 3.
