Around my house everything seems to be fine, my parents didn´t feel it (They are asleep)...There is some mixed information about San Pedro Sula so far, but I´m getting most of my information from friends or twitter so that´s not entirely objective... We are on Tsunami watch, the epicenter was just a few miles from Bay Islands so I guess that´s were there could be more damage...I´m just watching CNN but there´s no much information, beyond that there has been a 7.1 eartquake in Honduras... Menlman, who was nominated by Amber Pasternak ’01, is a Homework Help Coordinator at the Worthington Public Libraries, and is also a volunteer with Court Appointed Special Advocates of Franklin County. Pasternak tells us of Mehlman’s accomplishments. Mehlman participated in Teach for America and spent two years teaching fifth grade in an underserved school in New York City while earning her master’s degree. LOS ANGELES — A moderate earthquake that jolted Southern California was felt by millions and sent at least one person to a hospital, but the region avoided significant damage and major injuries. The magnitude-4.7 quake hit at 8:39 p.m. Sunday night, centered about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and three miles east of Los Angeles International Airport, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. At least 10 aftershocks had followed by early Monday, with the largest registering magnitude-3.1. The quake rattled the greater Los Angeles region for about 10 to 15 seconds and was felt as far south as San Diego, said USGS seismologist Susan Hough. "This was a serious jolt. It was probably felt within 100 miles," Hough said.Read more »
Fierce winds blew a wildfire into Southern California homes Wednesday, forcing residents to flee as columns of smoke rose from a scenic coastal enclave. TV news helicopters showed homes ablaze in Santa Barbara, but the number could not be immediately determined because of thick smoke. Authorities ordered 2,000 homes evacuated Wednesday afternoon, up from an earlier evacuation order of 1,200. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency and asked federal authorities to issue an assistance grant to ensure financial resources are available for firefighting. Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. The outnumbered Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army that had not been defeated in almost 50 years.
Cinco de Mayo is not "an obligatory federal holiday" in Mexico, but rather a holiday that can be observed voluntarily.
While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
