contestants don’t even get to enjoy much of that sunny L.A. weather because they spend most of their time indoors, at assembly tables and sewing machines.

The 16 contestants are a mixed bag of personalities and pasts. There is Ari, who says she designs “transformative clothing” that somehow makes the outfit and the wearer come together as water, and who prepares for the first challenge, not by sketching an outfit, but by standing on her head and meditating. Tim Gunn gives his usual “smart answer,” hoping her outfit doesn’t turn out to look like an over-sized diaper.
